Things to note:

We really didn't hold back when it came to spending money. Every hostel we stayed at had kitchens where you could cook your own food, the small convenience stores like Lawsons and 7 Eleven had cheap ready made meals to buy, however we ate out and drank out pretty much every day of the trip

Then on our first journey we got the pass "activated" at the ticket office

All journeys from then on, we took our pass to the ticket office, they print out the tickets and it doesn't cost anything extra as it's included in your pass

If you want to do the real life Mario Kart, you NEED an INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS LICENCE.
